Dallas is expected to make big investments in its infrastructure in the coming years. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has grown by almost 20% over the last 10 years, with the majority of that being on the periphery.

Thanks to single-family zoning laws, DFW has grown out rather than up, and today occupies an area roughly the size of New Jersey. Unlike many cities on the West Coast, which have essentially developed all usable land, Dallas has plenty of space for everyone. The terrain is flat and providing additional services is easy. Tying these communities together, however, requires upgrading existing highways and building access to these new developments.

City officials are hoping to increase business travel to the DFW area (already one of the most popular destinations in the country) by investing in a new convention center downtown. It will break ground in 2024 and open four years later and will be attached to existing buildings. Once complete, Dallas will be able to rival Las Vegas and Chicago for large trade shows and conventions – and crucially, their attendees. This will hopefully drive demand for hotels, restaurants, and retail, and add potentially billions of dollars to the city’s economy.
